The waters off the coast of Almeria, Cabo de Gata in particular, are a diver’s paradise. This is one of the best places to go diving in Spain.
Cabo de Gata is the only place of maritime-land throughout the entire Community of Andalusia. It has one of the most amazing land and seascapes on the Almeria coastline.
The waters here are packed with a fantastic variety of fish and visibility is normally excellent. Expect to see; snappers, Pollack’s, grouper, ocean sunfish, barracudas, eagle rays, morays, brown meagres, moray eels, conger eels, white breams, and many red sea fish.
It's true - one of the greatest wealth of this natural space is under the sea. In these submarine green extensions you'll also find numerous species of crustaceans and molluscs.
There are some spectacular wreck dives you can do here. Although due to strong currents, you'll need a PADI Advanced cert. (or equivalent).
There's a popular wreck site located one-nautical mile SW of the Cabo de Gata Lighthouse. You dive down to between 27 and 42 metres to a merchant ship 100 metres long. It sunk in the 1920s when it collided with a rock. Visibility is amazing and there is a fantastic variety of fish to be seen.
Flying - If you have a head for heights why not take a flight in a microlight over the beach at the Indalo Wings Microlight Centre or try your hand at paragliding.
Hiking, rock climbing - just the area for these activities - see elsewhere for information of 'virgin beaches' and Cabo de Gata National Park

Almeria province has been the backdrop for literally hundreds of movies; everything from the Clint Eastwood classics like A fist full of Dollars to more recent films like Conan the Barbarian.
Movie making in Almeria reached its peak during the 1960s and 70s. Back then you would see Hollywood’s biggest names in this dusty isolated part of Spain.
This is where they shot the award winning "Lawrence of Arabia" - one of the first classics in the province. Many people regarded as director David Lean's finest work. It won seven Oscars. Most of the scenes were shot in the area between Alquian and Cabo de Gata.
"Lawrence of Arabia" turned Peter O'Toole into one of the biggest screen stars of the 1960s. He became a famous hell-raiser, whose off-stage drinking exploits are legendary. The film also showcased Almería as one of the most evocative and dramatic film locations on the planet.
Other classics shot here in include 'Cleopatra' in 1963, 'Patton' in 1970, and in 1989 Spielberg picked the desert Tabernas for parts of 'Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade'.
If you like westerns (Speghetti in particular) this is the place to visit. There are three theme parks - Mini Hollywood, Texas Hollywood and Western Leone - which have preserved sets used in the classic Sergio Leone films.
Located in what feels like the middle of nowhere, these charming sets were once home to such Hollywood greats as Clint Eastwood, Yule Brunner, Lee Van Clef and others.
Cycling through this area is an unforgettable experience. You can pass through an enormous variety of terrain all within a very short time.
You'll cycle over high mountain terrain, then right down to the Mediterranean coast. Along the way, you'll pass though the picturesque old Moorish villages of the Alpujarra and the pristine beaches of Europe's only desert oasis. Crossing the landscapes of southeastern Andalusia is like taking a journey back in time.
One popular route is from Guadix to Cabo de Gata. Along the way it passes through Yegen, Laujar de Andarax, Bentarique and San José. It's a mixture of culture, landscape and sea.
There's something magical about riding under the unique light of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. On route, you'll get to sample delicious local cuisine, which is completely unique and varied.
If you're lucky you might even get to see flocks of flamingos take flight from the Cabo de Gata salt flats.
Two of the high points of the route are the village of Yegen, immortalized in the writings of the English traveller, Gerald Brenan and the stunning Cabo de Gata coastline.
